From Samarkand to the Indus
The road south did not end at the mountains.
Beginning in Tashkent, the journey follows the tiled cities of Samarkand and Bukhara before crossing by air into Pakistan. Across the break, older connections remain visible in gardens, scripts, food and devotional life. Lahore carries these forms into the subcontinent; Hunza shifts the view towards water, settlement and movement through the Karakoram. The route follows what travelled—and what changed in transit.

The Route
Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara establish the urban world of Transoxiana through markets, courtyards, mosques and workshops. An air connection then crosses the missing middle to Islamabad. Lahore shows how Persianate and Central Asian forms were recast in the Punjab; the final movement towards Hunza follows the upper Indus into an inhabited mountain landscape.
Why This Route
The interrupted geography
Uzbekistan and Pakistan are connected here without pretending that a continuous road still exists. The necessary flight leaves the break in the geography visible.
Forms in motion
Courtyards, gardens, domes, gateways, inscriptions and Persian vocabulary appear differently in Samarkand, Bukhara and Lahore. Their changes reveal movement more clearly than resemblance alone.
An inhabited Karakoram
Hunza is approached through forts, irrigation channels, orchards and villages rather than mountain spectacle alone. Small systems of water and cultivation make settlement possible at altitude.

Day 01 · Tashkent
Arrival in Central Asia
Arrival and private transfer. The first evening is left deliberately light, with a welcome dinner and an introduction to the route. Overnight in Tashkent.
Day 02 · Tashkent
A capital built in layers
Explore the old-city area, Chorsu Bazaar and selected religious and civic sites according to access. Continue through the metro and the broad spaces of the modern capital. The day establishes the relationship between trade, state planning and daily life. Overnight in Tashkent.
Day 03 · Tashkent to Samarkand
South by rail
Travel to Samarkand by train. Begin around the Registan and remain into the later light, when surface, scale and public space become easier to read. Overnight in Samarkand.
Day 04 · Samarkand
Monument and material
Visit Shah-i-Zinda, Bibi-Khanym and Siyob Bazaar. Continue to a paper workshop in Konigil, where mulberry fibre is processed by hand. The day moves from imperial surface to the material of books and records. Overnight in Samarkand.
Day 05 · Samarkand to Bukhara
The city draws closer
Travel to Bukhara by train. Walk through the old city towards Lyabi-Hauz, allowing the sequence of trading domes, lanes and courtyards to establish the city before individual monuments are explained. Overnight in Bukhara.
Day 06 · Bukhara
Courtyard, workshop and prayer
Visit the Po-i-Kalyan complex, the Ark area and selected madrasas and workshops. Meet a local craft practitioner whose work may involve textile, metal, wood or manuscript arts, subject to availability. End with dinner in a family courtyard. Overnight in Bukhara.
Day 07 · Bukhara to Tashkent
The return east
Return to Tashkent by rail or air according to the final schedule. The remaining time is left open for rest, an independent walk or a focused museum visit. Overnight in Tashkent.
Day 08 · Tashkent to Islamabad
Across the break
Travel from Tashkent to Islamabad by air on a routing confirmed for the final departure dates. The service may be direct or require a connection. No additional visits are planned around the flight: airport procedures, immigration and the change of country form the day’s movement. Overnight in Islamabad.
Day 09 · Islamabad to Lahore
Towards the Punjab plain
Travel to Lahore by rail or private road transport. Enter the Walled City on foot in the later afternoon, when markets and food streets return the old city to its present tense. Overnight in Lahore.
Day 10 · Lahore
Garden, fort and city
Visit Lahore Fort, the Badshahi Mosque and the Shalimar Gardens according to access and opening conditions. Continue with a workshop or conversation focused on miniature painting, calligraphy or architectural conservation. Overnight in Lahore.
Day 11 · Lahore to Islamabad
A capital beside an older city
Return to Islamabad. Continue to Rawalpindi for a guided walk through an older market district, placing the planned capital beside the commercial city that preceded it. Overnight in Islamabad.
Day 12 · Islamabad to Gilgit and Hunza
Into the Karakoram
Fly to Gilgit, subject to weather, security review and operating conditions, then continue by private vehicle to central Hunza. The route follows the river towards Karimabad. This sector proceeds only with approved local arrangements; no public-road substitute through travel-warning areas is assumed if the flight is cancelled. Overnight in Hunza.
Day 13 · Hunza
Fort, village and water
Visit Baltit and Altit according to access, then walk through the surrounding settlement with attention to irrigation channels, orchards and the use of limited cultivable ground. Meet a local craft or community enterprise subject to confirmation. Overnight in Hunza.
Day 14 · Upper Hunza
Beyond the lake
Travel towards Gulmit and Passu, crossing the upper valley past Attabad Lake. Spend time with a local household or workshop and take a measured walk suited to conditions. The day ends beneath the Passu peaks rather than at a checklist of viewpoints. Overnight in Upper Hunza or central Hunza.
Day 15 · Hunza to Islamabad
Return from the mountains
Drive to Gilgit and fly to Islamabad, subject to weather and operating conditions. The route requires protected contingency time because northern flights may change at short notice. Final scheduling must provide a safe alternative approved before departure rather than assuming an unrestricted road transfer. Overnight in Islamabad.
Day 16 · Islamabad
Departure
Transfer privately to Islamabad airport according to the onward flight. The day remains free of scheduled visits so that it can absorb any approved contingency carried forward from the northern flight sector. International departure arrangements are confirmed only after the complete transport plan has passed operational and security review.
Accommodation, Transport and Meals
Accommodation
Accommodation is selected according to the route, the needs of the group and availability. This may include well-located city hotels, design-led properties, heritage stays or landscape lodges. Standards, room categories and any upgrades are agreed during the planning process.
Transport
Rail is used between the principal Uzbek cities where schedules allow. Uzbekistan and Pakistan are connected by an air routing confirmed for each departure, not by an overland crossing. Within Pakistan, the route combines private road transport, intercity rail where suitable and weather-dependent flights between Islamabad and Gilgit. No road fallback through an area under a current travel warning is assumed. A reviewed contingency plan is required before the route can move beyond Concept status.
Meals
Selected meals introduce the route through bread, rice, grilled meats, vegetables, tea and regional household cooking. Market visits, a Bukhara courtyard dinner and a meal or tea encounter in Hunza form part of the concept. Final inclusions, dietary planning, alcohol policy and food-safety review remain TBC.
