On the Edge of the Plateau
The road rises where the rivers divide.
Beginning beneath Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the route moves through Naxi villages before crossing Tiger Leaping Gorge on foot. It then rises into the Tibetan cultural landscape around Shangri-La, Deqin and Benzilan, where monastery, vineyard, forest and pasture occupy different elevations. Walking, road travel and time within local practices reveal how terrain and culture change together across northwest Yunnan.
Duration: 8 days
Recommended Season: May to October
Group Size: 4-8
Region: China - Northwest Yunnan
The Route
Near Lijiang, Naxi households, Dongba paper and village streets sit below the eastern mountains. Tiger Leaping Gorge is crossed over two days rather than viewed from the road. Beyond the gorge, the route enters a Tibetan Buddhist and agricultural landscape of monastery, old town, vineyard, pasture and high forest, with each climb changing vegetation, architecture and pace.
Why This Route
The gorge on foot
Tiger Leaping Gorge is given two days and one night. Distance restores the scale that a roadside viewpoint removes.
Culture changes with altitude
Naxi and Tibetan practices are encountered within their own locations. They are not compressed into a single idea of Yunnan.
Several ways of living with the land
Paper making, domestic cooking, thangka, wine growing and pastoral life show how work follows terrain. Each encounter remains subject to confirmed local participation.

Itinerary
Day 01 · Lijiang
Arrival below Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
Arrive in Lijiang and transfer privately to the hotel. The remainder of the day is left light for rest and the first adjustment to elevation. In the evening, a Naxi hotpot welcome dinner introduces the group and the movement ahead through village, gorge and plateau. Overnight in Lijiang.
Day 02 · Yuhu and Baisha
Paper, hearth and village street
Visit a Naxi household in Yuhu. Prepare tofu by the hearth, learn the basic process of Dongba paper making and take part in a portrait session using local dress, where appropriately arranged. Continue to Baisha for independent time in the old town. Overnight in Lijiang.
Day 03 · Lijiang to Tiger Leaping Gorge
The high trail begins
Drive to the trailhead near Naxi Family Guesthouse and begin the high trail. Walk approximately 17 kilometres via the Twenty-Eight Bends and Tea Horse Guesthouse to Halfway Guesthouse. The day includes sustained ascent and exposed mountain sections; luggage transfer and emergency support require advance confirmation. Overnight at Halfway Guesthouse or equivalent.
Day 04 · Tiger Leaping Gorge to Shangri-La
Above the Jinsha River
Continue approximately 10 kilometres past waterfalls and cliffside sections towards Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge. Exit to the road by the route approved for current trail conditions, then meet the vehicle and transfer to Shangri-La. Walking times, exit points and weather alternatives are confirmed before departure. Overnight near Songzanlin Monastery.
Day 05 · Shangri-La to Deqin
Monastery and old town
Visit Songzanlin Monastery, followed by an introduction to thangka through the method of a confirmed local practitioner. Spend time in Dukezong Ancient Town before driving north through the mountain valleys towards Deqin. Road and weather conditions determine the final timing. Overnight facing the Meili range, subject to property confirmation.
Day 06 · Deqin to Benzilan
Morning light and cultivated slopes
Rise early for views of the Meili range, weather permitting. Walk four to six kilometres through a U-shaped valley in the Baima Snow Mountain area, subject to access. Continue to Benzilan and visit a local vineyard and cellar for a guided tasting. Overnight in Benzilan.
Day 07 · Benzilan to Pudacuo
Forest, horse and pasture
Travel towards Pudacuo. Enter the forest and open pasture for a riding experience adapted to weather, trail and rider ability. Pause at a local camp for butter tea, food and music before an evening gathering. Overnight near Pudacuo, subject to camp operations.
Day 08 · Shangri-La or Lijiang
Departure from the plateau
Transfer to Shangri-La airport according to the confirmed onward flight plan. If air schedules require departure from Lijiang instead, the final road journey and an additional overnight must be built into the operational plan rather than added on the day. No formal visits are scheduled before departure.
Accommodation, Transport and Meals
Accommodation
Accommodation is selected according to the route, the needs of the group and availability. This may include well-located city hotels, design-led properties, heritage stays or landscape lodges. Standards, room categories and any upgrades are agreed during the planning process.
Transport
Private road transport throughout, with trekking on Days 03–04 and optional riding on Day 07. Vehicle configuration, trek luggage transfer, emergency support and weather-related exit plans require confirmation. The published eight-day route ends in Shangri-La; a Lijiang departure requires a revised schedule.
Meals
Selected welcome meals, household food experiences, trail meals and regional dinners form part of the concept. Final inclusions, dietary arrangements, water provision and alcohol policy are TBC.
