Across the Tianshan
Across one region, the landscape changes its language.
Beginning in the grasslands and spruce forests of Ili, the route crosses the Tianshan by air and continues from Kashgar towards the Pamirs. Green valley gives way to earthen city, wetland, high road and glacier. Farming, herding, trade and life at altitude provide the human line through a region too large and varied to hold within one image.

The Route
Ili is approached through pasture, spruce forest and seasonal land. A flight across the Tianshan shifts the route to Kashgar, where workshops, courtyards and old streets carry the city’s trading history into the present. The final movement follows the Karakoram Highway towards Tashkurgan, where wetland, settlement and glacier mark the rise into the Pamirs.

Across the divide
The route joins the water, grassland and forest of Ili with the earthen cities and high plateau of the south. The crossing makes the region’s scale visible.
Life within the landscape
Food, music, craft and pastoral work are encountered within the places that sustain them. Visits proceed through confirmed local relationships rather than staged access.
The road into altitude
The approach to Tashkurgan is gradual and visible. Lake, wetland and settlement give the Pamir road a human scale before the glacier.

Kashgar is read through lanes, courtyards, music and instrument making, where trading history remains present without holding the city in the past.

Baisha Lake · Tashkurgan · Muztagh Ata
The high road towards Tashkurgan brings Kyrgyz and Tajik settlements, ancient remains, wetland and glacier into one rising sequence.
Itinerary
Day 01 · Yining
Arrival in the Ili Valley
Arrive in Yining and transfer privately to the hotel. The remainder of the day is left light for rest after the journey. In the evening, a welcome meal introduces the food traditions of the Ili Valley and provides time for the route briefing. Overnight in Yining.
Day 02 · Yining to Nalati
Courtyard, bread and print
Visit the Kazanqi district and spend time in a local Uyghur home. Learn the basic process of making naan and encounter local music. Continue with a traditional block-printing session before driving to Nalati. A grassland music gathering may be arranged in the evening. Overnight in Nalati.
Day 03 · Nalati
The grassland in layers
Explore the high pasture, river valley and forest road of Nalati at an unhurried pace. A simple outdoor meal and photography session may be included subject to final design. End with sunset in the grassland and an optional staged performance. Overnight in Nalati.
Day 04 · Nalati to Kurdining
Through the spruce forest
Follow the Baoke road towards Kurdining as open grassland gives way to spruce forest. Ride through forest and meadow where weather, animal welfare and rider experience allow. Later, visit a Kazakh pastoral household for tea, bread and an introduction to seasonal livestock routines. Overnight in Kurdining.
Day 05 · Kurdining to Sayram Lake
The lake at evening
Leave Kurdining and pause in Huanghuang Village for a seasonal plant-dye or candle-making workshop, subject to practitioner availability. Continue towards Sayram Lake and spend the later afternoon along its western grassland. Tea at the lakeside may be arranged before sunset. Overnight near the lake, subject to access.
Day 06 · Sayram Lake to Kashgar
Across the Tianshan
Return to the lakeshore in morning light and look towards Guozigou before driving back to Yining. Fly across the Tianshan to Kashgar on the confirmed service. After arrival and transfer, begin the southern half of the journey with a local dinner and a quieter evening. Overnight in Kashgar.
Day 07 · Kashgar and Shufu
A city made by hand
Walk through Kashgar Old City around Id Kah Mosque and take part in a portrait session using Atlas silk dress, subject to cultural guidance. Continue to the instrument-making village in Shufu for a drum workshop and informal music beneath the vines. Overnight in Kashgar.
Day 08 · Kashgar to Tashkurgan
The high road begins
Follow the Karakoram Highway past Baisha Lake and Karakul Lake as the route gains altitude towards the Pamirs. Continue into the Tageman wetland and, where local access has been confirmed, pause in a village for tea with Muztagh Ata held on the horizon. Overnight in Tashkurgan.
Day 09 · Tashkurgan
Road, ruin and grassland
Drive the Panlong Ancient Road according to road and weather conditions, then return towards the Stone City remains and Golden Grassland. A visit with a local Tajik family may introduce tea, eagle-flute music and dance when arranged through an established local relationship. Overnight in Tashkurgan.
Day 10 · Tashkurgan to Kashgar
Below the glacier
Begin the return towards Kashgar, pausing at the Muztagh Ata glacier area only if road, altitude, permit and park conditions allow. The long drive retraces the transition from high plateau to the Kashgar basin, with appropriate rest stops along the route. Overnight in Kashgar.
Day 11 · Kashgar
Departure
Transfer privately to Kashgar airport according to the onward flight arrangements. No formal visits are scheduled, leaving sufficient time for departure procedures after the return from the Pamirs. Travellers remaining independently in Kashgar may arrange a later transfer or additional accommodation separately. The route ends in Kashgar.

Private road transport and one domestic flight from Yining to Kashgar. Flight schedule, vehicle configuration, road permits and baggage arrangements are TBC.
