Sichuan, Layer by Layer
A province read through appetite, ritual and terrain.
Beginning in Chengdu, the route moves from the social rhythms of food and tea to the bronzes of Sanxingdui, then north into the forests and lakes around Jiuzhaigou. It returns south to Mount Emei and Leshan, where tea, martial arts, performance and Buddhist history meet. One province reveals several landscapes—and more than one account of China.
Duration: 9 days
Recommended Season: April to June; September to November
Group Size: 4-8
Region: China - Chengdu, Jiuzhaigou, Mount Emei and Leshan
The Route
Chengdu provides the present tense through markets, kitchens, parks and teahouses. Sanxingdui opens a different account of early China; Jiuzhaigou shifts the route into a high-altitude conservation landscape. Mount Emei and Leshan bring embodied practice and Buddhist history together before the journey returns to the basin.
Why This Route
More than one ancient China
Sanxingdui complicates a single account of early China. Its bronzes and masks open a civilisation connected to the wider region yet visually distinct.
Forest as habitat
The panda programme is considered within the forests and altitude of northern Sichuan. Wildlife activity proceeds only through a confirmed facility and approved conservation practice.
Knowledge in practice
Cooking, tea making, martial arts and opera depend on gesture, timing and repetition. Participation reveals forms of knowledge that display alone cannot hold.
The Narrative
Chapter 01 · The Basin
Chengdu · Sanxingdui
Markets, parks and kitchens give Chengdu its present tense before Sanxingdui opens a much older and less settled account of the region.
Chapter 02 · The Northern Mountains
Jiuzhaigou
Rail carries the route towards lakes, forest and the Tibetan and Qiang cultural landscapes of northern Sichuan.
Chapter 03 · Mountain Practice
Mount Emei · Leshan
Tea, martial arts and stagecraft lead into Mount Emei’s religious landscape and the river-facing scale of the Leshan Giant Buddha.
Itinerary
Day 01 · Chengdu
The first taste
Arrive in Chengdu and transfer privately to the hotel. The remainder of the day is left light for rest after the journey. In the evening, a Sichuan hotpot dinner introduces a cuisine built around shared heat, timing and individual choice, followed by a briefing for the days ahead. Overnight in Chengdu.
Day 02 · Chengdu
The city at street level
Walk through Kuanzhai Alley before joining a Sichuan cooking session focused on preparation, heat and sequence. Continue to People’s Park for tea and the public life that gathers around it. Later, move through the city centre and end beside the Jinjiang River after dark. Overnight in Chengdu.
Day 03 · Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou
Another ancient China
Visit Sanxingdui and spend time with its bronze masks, standing figures and ritual objects without forcing them into a familiar dynastic sequence. Continue north by high-speed rail and road towards Jiuzhaigou as the route leaves the basin and rises into the mountains. Overnight near Jiuzhaigou.
Day 04 · Jiuzhaigou
Water through the forest
Spend a full day within Jiuzhaigou, moving between lakes, waterfalls and forest according to park access, visitor controls and seasonal conditions. Time is allowed for walking and observation rather than rapid coverage. An evening meal or locally grounded cultural programme may be arranged after review. Overnight near Jiuzhaigou.
Day 05 · Jiuzhaigou region
Conservation and its surroundings
Join a panda conservation programme at a confirmed facility, with exact activities determined by animal-welfare and operational rules. Where weather and access permit, continue to a guided experience centred on golden snub-nosed monkeys. A practitioner-led thangka introduction provides an alternative when outdoor conditions prevent the wildlife programme. Overnight near Jiuzhaigou.
Day 06 · Jiuzhaigou to Mount Emei
South to the tea slopes
Travel south by rail and road towards Mount Emei. Join a tea session close to the growing area, following the leaves from picking through the first stages of processing according to season. Continue with a local dinner in the Emei or Leshan region. Overnight near Mount Emei.
Day 07 · Mount Emei
Movement and stage
Spend the morning with a practitioner introducing the foundations of Emei martial arts through stance, balance and repeated movement. Later, meet a Sichuan opera practitioner for an introduction to stage technique and the discipline behind face-changing. Attend an evening performance if the programme is operating. Overnight near Mount Emei.
Day 08 · Mount Emei to Leshan
A Buddha seen from the river
Travel to Leshan and view the Giant Buddha by boat, keeping its relationship to the cliff, river and approaching vessels visible. Continue on foot through the city with selected local food stops before returning towards Chengdu or remaining in Leshan. The final overnight location follows the confirmed departure plan.
Day 09 · Chengdu
Return to the basin
Return to Chengdu according to the confirmed overnight plan and transfer privately to the airport. No formal visits are scheduled, leaving sufficient time for the journey from Leshan or Mount Emei and for departure procedures. Travellers continuing independently in Chengdu may arrange a later transfer or additional accommodation separately.
