China's eastern edge, read through power, trade and water.
Beginning with Beijing’s ceremonial scale, the route moves to Shanghai and then follows the waterways of Jiangnan through Suzhou, Wuzhen and Jiaxing. Imperial planning gives way to streets shaped by trade, then to gardens, workshops, canal towns and cultivated land. Monumental and domestic histories remain within the same journey, revealing several structures beneath the familiar image of eastern China.

The Route
Beijing is read through axis, wall and courtyard; Shanghai through trade, migration and neighbourhood change. South of the Yangtze, gardens, canals, workshops and farmland reveal a region organised around water and cultivated life. Moving north to south places these systems in sequence without reducing eastern China to either monuments or skylines.
Why This Route
Two urban orders
Beijing’s imperial axis is read beside its hutongs; Shanghai’s riverfront beside lane houses and former concession streets. Public form and lived space remain close.
Jiangnan in use
Gardens and canals sit alongside embroidery, storytelling, indigo dyeing, food and rural work. The region is encountered through practices that continue beyond its most familiar image.
Time to look closely
Selected encounters with ink, embroidery, cloth and food bring history into the hand. Unstructured periods in Shanghai, Suzhou and the canal towns leave room for observations that cannot be scheduled.

Beijing
Palace, wall and hutong establish Beijing’s shifts of scale before ink and shadow puppetry bring attention to individual practice.
Chapter 02 · A City Rewritten
Shanghai
Across the Huangpu and through its streets, Shanghai holds trade, migration and several periods of urban change within walking distance.
Chapter 03 · South of the Yangtze
Suzhou · Wuzhen · Jiaxing
Gardens, canals and old streets lead into embroidery, storytelling, dyeing and food as practices still repeated and adapted across Jiangnan.
Itinerary
Day 01 · Beijing
Arrival in the north
Arrive in Beijing and transfer privately to the hotel. The remainder of the day is left light for rest after the international journey. In the evening, a welcome meal introduces one of the city’s established food traditions and provides time for the group briefing. Overnight in Beijing.
Day 02 · Beijing
Axis and alley
Visit the Forbidden City and look back across its central axis from Jingshan Park. Continue to the 798 area for an introduction to calligraphy and Chinese painting. End among the lanes and lakes around Shichahai and Nanluoguxiang, with an optional evening in Sanlitun. Overnight in Beijing.
Day 03 · Beijing
The wall and the screen
Travel to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, allowing substantial time for walking and for reading how the structure follows the ridge. Return to the city for a shadow-puppetry encounter and a traditional Beijing hotpot dinner. Overnight in Beijing.
Day 04 · Beijing to Shanghai
A different urban order
Fly to Shanghai and transfer into the city. Begin with local cuisine, then follow the changing urban scale towards the Bund and the Huangpu River. An evening dining or performance experience may be arranged; any historical-dress element remains optional and subject to appropriate design and operational confirmation. Overnight in Shanghai.
Day 05 · Shanghai
Garden, lane and concession
Visit Yu Garden early, followed by the surrounding City God Temple area. Later, walk through former concession streets towards Sinan Mansions and Xintiandi, noticing changes in housing, street width and public life. A lacquered-fan workshop introduces one contemporary continuation of a traditional process. Overnight in Shanghai.
Day 06 · Shanghai to Suzhou
South by water and rail
Keep the morning open for independent time in Shanghai. Continue to Suzhou and walk through the Pingjiang Road district. Visit a historic residence for tea and an introduction to Suzhou embroidery, followed by a regional dinner and pingtan performance. Overnight in Suzhou.
Day 07 · Suzhou
The cultivated view
Visit Suzhou Museum, the Humble Administrator’s Garden and Lion Grove Garden. Together they trace connections between collecting, architecture, rockwork, water and the framed view. Later, move to Jinji Lake, where contemporary Suzhou changes the city’s scale and takes over the horizon. Overnight in Suzhou.
Day 08 · Suzhou to Wuzhen and Jiaxing
Canals in motion
Travel to Wuzhen and enter the canal town on foot. Walk its old streets, take a small boat along the waterways and visit an indigo-dye workshop to see pattern and process together. Continue to Jiaxing and stay near the Yuehe historic district, subject to hotel confirmation. Overnight in Jiaxing.
Day 09 · Jiaxing to Shanghai
Food, field and return
Explore Yuehe and visit a museum or workshop dedicated to Jiaxing rice dumplings. Continue to a rural property for seasonal activities and a shared meal before returning to Shanghai. An evening rooftop gathering may be arranged subject to venue confirmation. Overnight in Shanghai.
Day 10 · Shanghai
Departure
Transfer privately to the airport according to the onward flight arrangements. No formal visits are scheduled, leaving sufficient time for departure procedures and the journey home. Travellers continuing independently in Shanghai may arrange a later transfer or additional accommodation separately. The ten-day route ends in Shanghai.

Accommodation
Accommodation is selected according to the route, the needs of the group and availability. This may include well-located city hotels, design-led properties, heritage stays or landscape lodges. Standards, room categories and any upgrades are agreed during the planning process.
Transport
Private road transport, one domestic flight between Beijing and Shanghai, and regional rail or road transfers through Jiangnan. Final routing is TBC.
Meals
The route concept includes selected regional meals and leaves several periods open for independent dining. The final meal plan and dietary arrangements are TBC.
